Just bits on a wire

We invariably left the prairies, in my heart
Since well it never moved an inch
Does the love grow, home with the wild rose?
Now, somethings moving out here
Oh Rural Alberta Advantage… where were you when I was in school.  This would have been my theme song.
Back to Calgary on Friday - it’ll be good to be home.

Exciting news: Reverie Sound Revue will be releasing a new album in June!!  It’s too bad that they aren’t planning on playing shows together anymore..

I was driving home from running errands listening to CJSW, the college radio station here in Calgary, and on comes this tune. It starts off instrumental and builds slowly, guitars and piano getting louder and receding, back and forth. A few minutes in and I’m completely engulfed. I stop in a parking lot and just sit there listening for almost the full 9 minutes and 16 seconds.

After some research I find out the band is a local one from Calgary called The Neighbourhood Council, none of the members being over the age of 20. I searched at three different record stores before finally snatching the second last copy at Melodya Records. Well worth the five dollar investment… wow! Anyway I could yammer on but how about I just go post the song eh?

As most Waterloo students know, there is a fairly heated referendum regarding the $5.50 a term fee that goes to CKMS, the university radio station. I had planned to write a big post about this but got sidetracked with midterms and assignments. Regardless, hear me out before you cast your ballot:

  1. Stop all the militant campaigning. It’s $5.50 a term and not the end of the world. If you’re really that passionate about it, go get a refund for your money and buy yourself a beer. Now let’s talk about it like adults, eh?
  2. Removing the fee would severely jeopardize the station. What about a slow, graduated reduction in the fee over the span of several years. This would allow the station to seek additional funding.
  3. Believe it or not, community radio can and DOES work. Just look to KEXP for proof. They have amazing programming and availability; the playlists are realtime and you’re able to tune in via radio or online. We’re a school of engineers and computer scientists - we should be able to make a rivaling system easily.
  4. Both KEXP and CJSW (Calgary’s campus radio) have very public funding drives. Individuals who donate receive a “Friends Card” which gives discounts and deals at various local businesses.

My thoughts here are cluttered but my point is that we should be looking at alternatives and solutions, not bickering back and forth over a $5.50 fee.

Alright, now go ahead and vote. (You’ll have to provide your userid/password)

The band No Kids (with members from P:ano) is making a steady rotation on my iTunes. It’s kind of off-kilter and I love it.

You’ve heard it. You can’t un-hear it.

My Google Reader has been noticeably quiet, so I thought I’d start get things started. Come on kids, those blogs aren’t gonna write themselves. A mixed-media update:

Lucy

I went down to the Roasterie on Christmas eve to grab a quick coffee and ran into Lucy, who had just came in from Montreal hours earlier. We sat outside and drank our coffee and chatted. A lady offered us her last chocolate turtle and we thanked her kindly. This is a picture of Lucy, and here is another picture of the coffee roaster that spouts beautiful smells into the Kensington neighborhood.

Roasterie

Christmas day I went snowboarding with my cousins to Lake Louise. I’ve begun to despise crowds more and more, to the point where it’s a borderline phobia. In fact, I started to feel queasy at the Broken Social Scene concert last month for that very reason. Anyway, Christmas day is usually the only time during the holidays when the hills aren’t a complete nightmare and this year was no exception. What WAS unusual was the amount of snow. We were able to find a foot or two of powder on every run… The best day of riding I’ve had in a few years, for sure.

I caught Caro online a few days ago and she introduced me to a radio show called “This American Life”, each week featuring a different theme and a collection of stories. I particularily like the show on Kid Logic.

Another holiday discovery has been this song by David Vandervelde.

And lastly, this White Ninja Comic cracked me up.

Check out the CBC Bucky awards at noon today!

Judging by the nominees, I really need to brush up on my Canadian music. Jeez, I used to know it all!

December 9th, 2007 - 8:40 pm

Went to the Broken Social Scene show last night with Alex, Jaisal, and Michelle.  I hadn’t seen them play since Olympic Island a few years back.  A really good show, although no female vocalists to sing “Anthems”.  However Andrew Kenny playing American Analog Set’s “Hard to Find” more than made up for it.

Cruised home at 3am and fell asleep in the back seat of the car.  Good weekend!

CBC is releasing a bunch of tracks from their amazing live sessions.

Too bad they’ve taken down the Cadeaux session from a few years ago - it was one of the best on there.

Final exam in 45 minutes.  I should go.
